about seed science

Seed Science Ltd. is the first fully recirculating landbased commercial shellfish hatchery in North America. Incorporated in 2003 and based in Nanaimo, BC, Canada. We mostly produce larvae and  seed  of pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), gallo mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), Manila clams (Venerupis philippinarum), geoduck clams (Panopea generosa). These are sold to shellfish growers in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to these, we are licensed and have experience producing 22 different species of invertebrates including echinoderms, gastropods, and crustaceans.

With a strong focus on environmental sustainability, the company designed and built the first floating hatchery in North America on a barge; and after running it for 10 years, designed and built our current recirculating hatchery.

Utilizing only artificial sea water, we are totally isolated from the sea with neither intake or effluent discharge. Our use of artificial seawater enables us to strictly monitor and control the environmental parameters ensuring that the growing shellfish have the optimal conditions for survival and growth.
